To Ji-won Kim,

Please forgive me for not saying "goodbye" in person.

I am being forced to leave... all because of a sick rumor.

Should you hear a rumor about me, please do not pay any attention to it.

It's a story made up by people plotting against me...

Once I leave, I'm sure you'll be bored because there will be no one left to entertain your ridiculous theories and ideas. For me, I'll be sad because there will be no one to understand my world of art.

To ease the sadness of saying goodbye, I leave you a farewell gift.

It's my painting of you holding your first art piece.

I think you said you created that piece to hide something important, right?

Anyways, I wish you good health and good luck in the future.

먼지 덮인 편지지

김지원 선생에게

이렇게 편지로 작별 인사를 하는 나를 용서하게.

불미스러운 소문 때문에, 이렇게 쫓기듯 떠나게 되었네.

혹시 나에 대한 이상한 소문을 듣게 된다면, 그냥 한 귀로 듣고 흘려버리게.

우매한 자들이 나를 매도하기 위해 퍼트린 낭설일 뿐이니...

내가 떠나고 나면 자네의 그 허무맹랑한 가설을 들어줄 사람이 없어 답답하겠지만, 나도 내 미술 세계를 이해해 줄 사람이 없을 것 같아 서운하기 짝이 없네.

석별의 정을 달래고자 자네에게 선물을 하나 남기고 가네.

자네가 스스로 만든 첫 작품을 들고 있는 모습을 화폭에 담아 봤네.

중요한 물건을 숨겨두기 위해 만들었다고 했던가..?

아무튼 그럼 건강하게 지내길 바라겠네.
